DANGER! CHILDREN AT WORK
Written by Jonas

In this article, I will give my views on children working. A common thing for many teenagers, before or after school.

In the old days it was school, followed by work at home. Then, the work part sort of got kicked out in the 80's and 90's. But, the phenomenon has slowly returned, and is now a big part of many teenagers every day life. I think one of the main reasons for that is, that many teenagers wants to have their own source of income, and doesn't want to rely on their parents' monthly or weekly handouts. Though, it's not because every teenager in the world works, there is still a great deal of them who don't. Including me, by the way. But, let's talk about the ones that actually do, shall we?

Many of my friends work, one at a cinema, another one at a supermarket, and so forth. They usually go to school, and then a little while after, they will be headed for their jobs. These jobs, which are usually very demanding, lasts to about 6pm. 4 hours of hard, honest work. Now, is there anything wrong with that? Not on the contrary, no. I mean, it learns them to take responsibility, and stuff like that. So on the contrary, no. But, if you dig a little deeper, I think you will definitely find a lot of things wrong with it. The biggest thing being that it has effects on how they do at school. Because when you come home at 6pm, hungry, tired and exhausted, your first thought isn't to do homework, is it? That's actually your last thought, I would think. I mean, the whole reason why they even got the job, was so they could get the newest games and fashion. Let's take an example, one of my friends, who I won't name, pretty much works from 2-6 most days. When he comes home at 6pm he will perhaps eat some dinner, then at 7:30pm he will finally have some time for himself. Time to play that new game he bought, but oh no! He discovers that he has to prepare a presentation for Biology tomorrow. Let's say, he refuses to do that, and instead just plays the night away. Which is probably what would happen in that case. It's the next day, and he has biology. The biology teacher asks him to do his presentation, but oh no! He didn't do it. The teacher is mad, and gives him -3 in Biology. So, to tell a long story short, I definitely think that it affects just how well they do at school. They just don't have time to do their homework, when working the afternoon away.

Another thing I was asked to talk a little bit about, was children in Africa working until they drop dead. Though, I won't get too much into that, since I think it is pretty obvious what anyone's opinion would be on that. It's of course a horrible thing, and I don't wish to mention it more than that.

Now, it may have sounded like I was completely against teenagers working before, though I am not. I definitely still think that there is benefits to it. It gives them a feeling of self-worth, which is a good thing. And, I'm sure that there is a lot of people thinking that it's a good idea. And, I'm sure they have got a bunch of good reasons. I just personally think that the bad things about teenagers working, slightly outweighs the good things. And as stated before, I don't work myself, but maybe if I did work, I would have a totally different opinion. But for now, I just think that it harms them a little bit too much school-wise.
